Well we are back from our week on Anglesey and thought I should do a site report. This is the first time I have written such a thing so please excuse me if I waffle on or it doesn’t “flow” lol.

CAE MAWR CC Site

We arrived at the site at 1250hrs after a 2 ½ hr journey. It should really have taken 2 hrs but road works on the A55 dual carriageway slowed things down.

The reception building sells milk, gas, ice creams, local cakes and a few other “bits”. Newspapers can be ordered for the following day.  Next to reception is an information point which contains lots of leaflets about Anglesey and North Wales. Also has a folder with details of places to go if you wish to eat out. These range from fish and chips to restaurants.

Booking in was quick and easy as we had already made a reservation.

The Wardens were friendly and chatty and told us that we could choose any pitch that was not occupied. They also advised us to look out for markers indicating that a pitch was in use by a motor home. That might be obvious to most of you but we had not thought of it.
All we then had to do was let them know which pitch we were on. As it turned out we were still levelling the ‘van when the warden came past so there was no need to go back to reception.
Also, we were told to go and see them if we wanted any help at all in setting up.
I don’t know if that was because they noticed my walking stick or if it is usual practise but I have a feeling it is the latter.

We chose a hard standing although there were grass ones available too. It was quite level and within an hour we were set up, awning erected, TV aerial up and having a cuppa.

I suppose you could say that the site is in two main parts.

1.  The “upper” part (running West – East) closest to the entrance which has a few hard standings but mostly grass pitches around and in the middle of an oval shaped road. There are 2 Service Points and 2 Chemical Toilet Emptying Points.

2.  The “lower” part (running North – South) which is furthest from the entrance. Another oval shaped road with a mixture of grass and hard standing pitches. This is where we were. There are another 2 Service Points and a Motor Van Waste Point.  Also, at the Northern and Southern ends of this area lovely grass area with pitches.

The whole site was very clean, tidy and well maintained by the staff. Very little road noise from the B5110 which runs close to the site.

TV reception was good although a couple of people complained to me that they could not get a picture. Once I had pointed their aerial in the right direction  Confused  and plugged the lead directly into the TV and NOT through the caravans booster they were fine.
I have found that if you have a TV within inbuilt digital tuner it works far better this way.
I also took the opportunity to give my “satellite in a suit case” its first test.  All I will say here is that it worked and I will put a report in the Equipment and Accessories section.

There is not really much else to say about this site except that we liked it so much that before we left we booked to go back again next month AND the resident Wardens are now in their 7th season at this site by their own choice which I think says a lot about it.

A point worth noting for any of you intending to use the A55 into North Wales and/or Anglesey is that the road works are expected to be there until spring 2009 (whenever that might be lol). When we came back through there on the way home on Friday I would say that the tailback of traffic going West was about 5 miles at 1130hrs !!

Now lets hope the piccies that Baz (my wife) took have attched to this thread.

Thankyou for a good report. Did you notice if there is a dog walk on site?

Looks like this one will be on my "Sites to visit" list

Thanks for the report Steve. The one and only time I have stayed at Cae Mawr was in 1976 with my parents when I was 6 years old! Apart from the EHU bollards and camper van service points, the site looks pretty much the same.

A couple of years ago, we stayed at the Penrhos CC site further up the road. I've always had a soft spot for Anglesey and would like to go back soon.

Forgot a couple of things in my original report:

1. There is NO toilet/shower block on this site.
2. There is a dog walk starting right beside the main gate. A public footpath which leads to a wooded area.

Hi Steve,

I hope you don't mind me asking but we are thinking about purchasing a porch awning idential to yours, we currently have an nr coniston which is starting to wear.

How easily does it go up and down ?

How heavy is it ?

Does it withstand winds and bad weather ?

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian. There isnt a picture showing our van and awning, you must be looking at one of the others.

We have a Bradcot Portico XL which we find VERY easy to erect thanks to the "Easy System" frame. We would certainly reccomend it.

An Update:

We went to Cae Mawr again 2 weeks ago for our first trip of the year.

This was our 4th visit and we were not disappointed. The same Wardens were there, now in their 8th year. Little has changed except that the pitches in one of the lower grassed areas have now been converted to hard standings and to a very good standard. It did need doing as the grass ones tended to get waterlogged.

Will we go again? ................ most definately we will ....... in fact we hope to stay there at least 2 or 3 more times this year.

Steve
