Site located on the outskirts of the town of Loches and very handy for visiting the Chateaux of the Loire valley such as Chenonceau.
The pitches were quite large, we had booked a pitch with water and drainage. Only problem with that was the pitch was slightly sloping towards the rear of the pitch and the drainage point was sited towards the front. Had to improvise a bit and use blocks of wood to raise and support the drainage pipe, no real hassle though. The site is a very easy 10 minute walk to the town along a level path beside the river L'Indre. The town is attractive with narrow winding streets, a lovely public garden as well as the historic buildings of the Citadelle, the Donjon, The Logis Royale ( think I spelt that correctly?) and the cathedral. I'm going to post some photos in the gallery if anyone interested.
Bread could be ordered from reception but I prefered to walk along to the baker's shop in the morning, better selection and freshly made.
There was a small bar/restaurant in the centre of the site with outdoor pool next to it. An open kid's play area with trampoline, table tennis, badminton net was also located in the same area. Some entertainment was organised in the bar area, kids disco, karaoke and paella night. The entertainment could be quite noisy and I would recommend anyone looking for peace and quite to try and get a pitch away from the bar and play area. To be fair any entertainment was finished by around 11pm and the site was very peaceful by 11.30.
Toilets were cleaned daily but the ones next to play area took a bit of a hammering and could have done with more regular cleaning.
In my opinion the best thing about the site was its location, close to the town and handy for outings.
Overall we did enjoy our stay and would return.

Plotter, If Chambord is better than Chenonceau then it must be pretty spectacular!
We were all really impressed with the chateau. We had hoped to visit Amboisie but never managed.
La Citadelle is being seriously considered for a return visit next summer so that we can visit some more chateaux, I will certainly keep Chambord in mind. |

Hi Chambord is the biggest in France with over 400 rooms and massive grounds with wild boar etc and at the Chateau horse displays and all very cheap to watch ,within one mile is Chateau des Marais caravan site which I highly recommend for this and all the main Chateau.
Google Chateau Chambord and be prepaed to go wow. |

I don't know about the Chateau Chambord website but I did have a look at the caravan site webpage, Chateau des Marais, and the prices certainly mede me go wow. For two adults and one teenager in early July it costs about 44 euros per night, approx 35 quid!! Was it that expensive when you visited? |

| Forgot to say we have been to the site many times usually for about three day on the way up or down the country (or both) and on occasions have stayed extra nights paid direct to the site and from memory about half what you are quoting |

Plotter, have a look at this link and see for yourself -
http://www.chateau-des-marais.com/gb-campsite.html
Period commencing 14 July this year is priced at 34 euros a night for pitch, 2 persons and car. Electric is either 5 or 7 euros per night depending on ampage.
Extra teenager is 7 euros per night. I read a review on ukcampsite where someone commented that it cost her family 50 quid a night. Does seem a good site, but a bit pricey.
I've had a look at the Chambord chateau website, you're right it does look spectacular. One for next time hopefully.

For early July the price only drops by 4 euros per night to 30. The supplements for extra person, hook up etc remain the same. So for us, family of three, pitch with hook up would cost 44 euros per night. Perhaps there may be a discount if booking with the likes of Select Sites, might try it next year and see.
Any other sites in that general area you have been to and could recommend?
Something with a similar location to La Citadelle i.e.within walking distance of town would be ideal.
Thanks
Robert |
