This site is set in an old quarrey and at one point was used as a storage area for coal, until it was turned into a caravan site. Despite the quarrey setting the site felt open and cliffs were very impressive. The far end of the site gave the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, but Buxton is only a 3 mile walk away. The pitches are mainly hardstanding but there is a few grass pitches too and an area for tents. The childrens play area is large with some good things to climb on. The toilet block is perhaps looking a bit tired and old fashioned, but is perfectly acceptable. However the wardens did keep closing off a number of the shower, toilet and privacy cubicles and I couldn't think why, but then I realised that they were closed off if not too many people were staying, so that they didn't have so many to clean each day. Is this normal practice? I did come in one morning to find not only was there a queue for the showers but for the loos as well.
The pitches are of a decent size and some have a hedge surrounding them so that you have a completly separate bay form your neighbour. There is TV hook up on the EHU and mobiles don't have a good signal. There is no dedicated dog walk on site, but once through the site entrance you are in the country park and dogs can be off the lead apart from the fields that you drive through to the site which have sheep. As there had been lots of rain we didn't explore the woodlands keeping in the open ground round the tower on the top of the hill. It turned very cold whilst we were there, but on the last day the wind dropped and it warmed up and thousands of flies appeared from nowhere and decended on the site. Even the dogs were tormented by them.
Whilst we were at Castleton, further north, we had a look at Lose Hill. This seemed to be a very pleasant site and although it did have a dog walk it was at the site entrance and rather small. Castleton is within easy walking distance (on the level too) and the whole area is very pretty apart from the stone quarrey at Hope.
Grin Low is a very good site and set within some glorious countryside. Here are me piccies |

Brings back memories Gill - we were there last year and thought it was a lovely site.
Yes, it is normal for the wardens to close off 1 or 2 toilets and showers at off-peak times of the year, so they don't have so many to clean. We've encountered this lots of times, although I have to say we've never found it a problem and never really had to queue before. |

I can imagine. We awoke one morning to the ninety mile an hour fog syndrome, just like we used to get when we lived in the Yorkshire Dales. For the uninishiatated, its low cloud with a gale blowing and not at all nice |

I was thinking exactly the same thing. A spot of nice weather can make a lot of difference. |
