We stayed at this site 3 years ago when it was under private ownership, we came away with mixed thoughts, we loved the location, the reception/shop area was lovely, the toilets were clean but it just felt to over crowded and was very expensive.
Now that it was under caravan club ownership we decided to return this weekend to see what they had done.
It is easily accessed from the main Brecon-Hereford road. Upon arrival you stop outside reception and check in, the wardens were all really helpful, this site has 3 couples. The site has standard & serviced pitches. Standard is either grass or hardstanding and they all include EHU which I believe is 16 amp. Serviced has gravel pitch with EHU, fresh water tap and waste point. Some grass pitches also have re enforcement under the grass to try and prevent bogging. Once past reception you either go left or right, to the left is mostly serviced pitches although there are a few standard pitches around the play area which seem to be kept for people with young chidren. If you go straight on past reception this takes you to the largest part of the site where there are standard and serviced pitches. All hardstandings are around the edge. Serviced pitches are marked with blue pegs to prevent confusion. We were lucky to get the last standard hardstanding pitch. We felt a bit guilty paying the same as those on grass because the pitch was massive and was even separated by low shrubs. The pitches opposite us were serviced. However, we had a water tap infront of the pitch which was excellent because we could pitch up and then fill up the tanks.
The hardstandings were all mostly level but the grass pitches looked like they would need levelling blocks. Maybe it was just me but the grass pitches looked a lot more spaced out than they did before and the hardstandings were all massive. SWMBO even commented that she thought a pitch marker must have been missing off one hardstanding because one pitch could have easily accomodated 2 outfits.
Tv reception is stated as fair, but we got an excellent picture. The motorhome opposite us had a roof mounted dish that seemed to be going round and round, eventually the man came out with an annoyed look on his face and erected a standard aerial on a mast so I assume that satellite was not possible, maybe because there were loads of trees.
The dishwashing area was all inside the amenity block which is an added bonus in the colder months when it is nice to be in the heat.
The toilet blocks were all clean and upto standard. The site also had a shop but this seemed to be sub let to a local shop keeper and prices were through the roof. Before we left home SWMBO told me to pack the wine and yea I forgot, we went in the shop to pick up a bottle but they were all really expensive so I had no wine
I guess it is handy though if you really are desperate for something like bread/milk.
The site is located next to a dual carrigeway but surprisingly it doesn't seem to be a problem. From the site you walk onto the path next to the road, cross the carrigeway and you can go down some steps onto the canal towpath. You can either walk one way which I believe goes to Abergavenny or you can walk the other into Brecon. BY heading to Abergavenny you pass Brynich lock and then Brynich viadcut which are both well worth a look. We had the bikes so went quite a distance. We passed a CL called the Old stables (cambrian cruisers) which looked lovely.
Alternatively, the site has its own massive dog walk which leads down to the river where there was an adventure playground but it was all closed off so I assume it was not fit for use.
This caravan club site also has a large tent field which seemed well drained and was very level.
All in all it is an excellent site which I would rate as one of the nicest I have seen. Access was simple and even the grass seemed solid which was a nice change from the boggy cl's in Pembrokeshire (note: one picture you can see the mud on the tyres where we got bogged last weekend )
Would I visit again ??? Definitely!! It is the nicest, relaxing and most well kept site we have been to.
Hope this helps.

Looks a lovely site Ian. We stayed in the Brecon Beacons about 4 years ago at the CC site called Pandy and took a walk along the canal one day. It is a lovely peaceful place to be so would be good to stay at this new site which is right by the canal.

The wardens are now CC wardens, but if you look at site1 pic you can see 2 american motorhomes and an american caravan, those were the wardens.
We were thinking of going upto Builth Sunday morning and neither me or SWMBO have ever been there before. Ahh well more of an excuse to go there for a weekend now lol
The only problem, Gill, is that to get to the canal you have to cross 2 dual carrigeways but just wait for a quiet time and RUN
We stayed at Pandy many years ago, it wasn't my favourite site, to loud with the train running alongside.

I might be wrong Ian but I thought there was an underpass? |

Not from Brynich, there was a bottom gate out where you went onto a concrete path made by the site I believe, you walked down this back to the big roundabout and then down the Abergavenny road slightly and then the path took you across the dual carrigeway, then across the other side and then the path took you back onto the Brecon bypass and you crossed this carrigeway and the other side and then the path took you down steps onto the canal.
I could imagine it could be a problem if you had small children on bikes or something. |

Hmmmm, that is dangerous. It looks as if there's been no incidents else there would be a pelican crossing. It takes a death to get one installed |
