We went in April 08, and the site had only been open a week at the time. The shower blocks werent even started and the site looked all new - new treed planted, brand spanking new office building and fences etc.

The site itself is not well signposted and it would be very easy to pass it and not notice. If you put the postcode in a SatNav, it takes you to Conkers itself, not the park (must share a postcode)

The site managers were very welcoming and friendly, giving us lots of hints on where to eat, where the pubs are etc.

The site itself is very open - very, very open! There is no shelter and so if you are adverse to a bit of wind and the elements think carefully before booking.

The pitches are mostly level, some sloping, but we had a hardstanding and it was very spacious.

The area is very quiet, infact it was a bit like a timewarp - the local pub 'The Navigation' was not pleasant, the locals looked at us like we had 2 heads and the place needed a good clean and redecorating! We felt very unwelcome and had one drink and left. Very unusual for us, we normally lay our feet in the local and call it home for the weekend.

Also, we couldnt find a shop for newspapers, bread etc within walking distance, we had to drive into Swadlincote to the supermarket.

Your comments surprise us. We stayed here November, Wed 5th - Sun 9th '08. We meet with family and friends for a "Post wedding Bash",

The toilet block was open when we stayed and was kept immaculate, with under floor heating, hair driers etc.

The signage isn't good and like you, we and my sister turned into the park itself.

We found the site wardens fantastic - they had a Wedding card waiting for us and congratulated us. Very Happy, we had a laugh every time we saw them.

The pub, we found very friendly - the children were allowed in without any questions. On the Saturday night a group of 8 went for a meal, complete with my sisters dog (he's was only a year old - which they allowed in the bar area), the meals and drinks for us all totaled £58 with a 10% discount for being on the camp site. The menu started at £3.95 for a baguette up to £20 for a 16 oz steak with all the trimmings, excellent value and fantastic quality and quantity.

As it was bonfire night(s) we had a 360 degree view of all firework displays, sitting inside our van with the heating on and a nice glass or two of the red stuff Smile .

Would we go back Definitely a YES, would we recommend it - yes we would. We are looking to go back the same time this year, can't think of a better place to be for a free fireworks display.

We have stayed here a few times and we like it ,right next door to really nice walk and loads of open fields/woods/
Persoanlly I didnt think much of Conkers visitor center but the kids love the army asault course and indoor play area .
