Exe Valley Caravan Site, which is on the edge of Exmoor is a lovely site. It's long and narrow and is actually on an island with the River Exe on one side and the Mill race on the other. The owners are friendly enough and also trusting enough not to take a deposit when booking, just asking you to let them know if you can't make it.
The A396, which most will take to reach the site from the M5, is a winding road with some sharp bends. Very few places to pull in or straights to let others pass.
Most of the pitches are on grass, some slightly sloping, with a few hardstandings at the far end next to the dog walk. The dog walk is a nice one, alongside the river, where at the end is a seat to rest and enjoy the view of the two weirs and a small waterfall where another river joins the Exe. Immediately turn right outside the gate and over the bridge there's a public footpath along on the other bank to a village nearby.
When on arriving you have to book in at reception which is over the footbridge at the mill, not the hut by the entrance which is the small shop which just sells essentials for a couple of hours a day.
We never used the shower block, we use our own mostly, but I would imagine they were spotless.
We were pitched on a hardstanding with the back of the van by the mill race which had trout in around 8 inches and these could sometimes be seen or heard jumping for flies. Fishing is free although you will need a rod licence.
The downside, and what I was looking forward to, was the wifi. When I asked about it you had to use your lappy around the mill for downloading emails etc. There was no reception on my Vodafone dongle. The only reception was Orange and that was weak.
If you book seven nights you only pay for six and the site is adults only. All are catered for, the tent pitches being alongside the river.
The only thing that spoiled it for us was the weather, it was five minutes rain, five minutes sun and thats how it went on for four days. Eventually the ground couldn't take any more water and in places the dog walk was like a quagmire. I did have visions of sitting on the bank behind the van in the hot sun, dangling my feet in the cool waters of the mill stream while sipping a Stella but it wasn't to be. Global warming my arse. I will be back though, if in that area, because it's a pretty site and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Now that does look like a nice site and fishing for Mike too We passed the site sign a couple of times while we were in the area and I couldn't quite work out where you entered the site. Your're right about the long and winding road, goes on forever doesn't it. What are the prices like?

Bugger, I was going to put that but forgot. That's why we need an edit feature for the posts originator in the Reviews forum I will probably think of something else I should have added soon.
You pay for six nights if booking seven Gill.

We passed Lakeside on the way and when going to the vets in Dulverton we found a car park and then noticed CC signs saying Exmoor House, we didn't know it was there
There was one chap used to fish the river, I saw him most evenings at dusk as I was taking the dogs out. Whether he caught anything I don't know but I would think that it only contains brown trout.
At the rear of our caravan was the mill stream and in the stream bed was a dip. There was a trout there all the time of our stay, he was around 8 inches long. Even if I scared him he would soon be back, that's if it was the same one
I would think the dip sheltered him and took the current over his body helping him to conserve energy. He was still there when we left
The dog walk was probably the cleanest I've seen with neither of us treading in other idle gits dogs dumps although I did spot a few around. One person had even broken off a sprig of leaves from a tree and put on the top of the dumps The trouble is you can never catch them and I believe that it happens late at night when others can't see the filthy buggers and I mean the owners not the dogs. They need their noses rubbing in it |

I cant beleive you went round our local rivers scaring trout. No wonder they dont like being caught with guys like you frightening them
Glad you liked the site, always a bit worried to say a site is nice. |
