This is a lovely site in a rural setting. I don't know what I expected of Romney Marsh, more marshiness I think, whereas its all fields surrounded by drainage channels. Towards the north there is a range of hills which apparently was the original coastline once upon a time. On the slopes is Port Lympne Zoo, so we could hear the lions roaring especially at night. The lane to the site is narrow with some passing places, but its a quiet road. Follow the CC handbook directions as all other roads are narrow with sharp bends. Take care when approaching the pub on the corner as sometimes cars coming from the other direction will be on your side of the road!

The site has a barrier system with a card to enter and exit the site and is a mix of hardstandings and grass pitches which are well spaced. On the hardstandings you can arrange your car and caravan how you like. This site has a number a seasonal pitches which are on the grass pitches. There was a big problem where the caravans and awnings had been during the season. A number of pitches were taken out of use as the grass was dead and needed to be dug over and re-seeded. There is a good enclosed childrens play area, a main toilet/shower block and a toilet block by the site entrance, a large play area for ball games and a good sized field for the dog walk which had no less then 3 dog poo bins. Despite big notices about clearing up after dogs (bags being available at the reception) some folk still seemed to think it didn't apply to them. However most people did clean up and despite being a large number of dogs on site, it was very quiet. The toilet block is either new or recently refurbished and a pleasure to use. The place seemed very friendly with people stopping to chat. I think this is due to the high number of seasonal vans. The wardens have produced a very helpful leaflet giving all sorts of handy information whether things to do for children, good shopping, pretty villages to visit, country parks, local walks, dog friendly beaches, car parks suitable for motor homes and much much more. Well worth the 20p donation to charity. Do not be out off if approaching the turn off to the site from Dymchurch. There is a very high embankment topped by a concrete wall (looked not unlike the Berlin Wall), its very industrial there and rather depressing.

There is a lot to do and visit in this part of Kent. Rye is a lovely town with cobbled streets, Rye Harbour nature reserve nearby is well worth a visit. Dungeness is a very strange place, very alternative in places and very industrial, but at the same time full of interesting wildlife. The RSPB reserve is very good. Another interesting place to visit is Samphire Hoe, between Folkstone and Dover. Its a sort of new bit of England. The material that was dug out of the channel tunnel had to go somewhere and it was piled up on a beach and now its a nature reserve. To get there you drive through a tunnel. Its very quiet, no road noise despite the A20 being on the other side of the cliff. Canterbury is lovely especially the cathedral. Ashford has a designer outlet (Macarthur Glen) and is worth a visit as the design of the centre is interesting and anyway they have a M&S outlet Laughing

We enjoyed our first visit to Kent and would like to see more of the county. Think we may try the west side next.

Some more pictures. You can see the tunnel entrance/exit at Samphire Hoe to the right of the railway tunnels.

and to think I gave you a map for free. They're all mine!!!

Forgot to say about the Rye, Hythe and Dymchurch railway which goes from Hythe all the way to Dungeness point (by the power station) We never actually saw it as the train is not running so often at this time of year, but heard the whistle from the site. Also if erecting an awning on a hardstanding, make sure you have rock pegs. So far that was the hardest hardstanding we've come across. Very Happy

Nice photos Gill. Is that a TV aerial or internet dongle on your mast?

Both Martin. The dongle was in a pink plastic bag at the top and made an eerie green/blue light at night. The signal was quite good, but fluctuated. Sometimes we were able to get 3G other times not. The tv wasn't too bad from the status aerial on the roof, but vastly improved by our own and we were able to get freeview on a good signal.

Hi Gill.we were there in September I to took photoes look under Royston in the picture gallery should be a train amongest them.
The wardens are a stickular for not before 12oclock arrival which will apeal to LB Very Happy
On this occasion we were parked along side the hedge as you approach the site from the Hythe area .
We were on a grass pitch needed my steel pegs to penertrate the soil,to erect my awning, the toilet block has been there for sometime , did you hear what appears to be a ships siren caused by a malfunction within the plumbing system. Toilet monster

The site can be prone to high winds, the sea only being 2 miles across the marsh, glad you enjoyed yourselvs, we often use this site not far from Essex, only problem is joining the M25 from the A12.

Royston
