Hi all

As i say, does anyone else use truck tyres on their van?

My lovely ace has just clocked up 5 years so as per recommendations i have changed the tyres, it sickened me as they had more tread on them than some new tyres i have fitted on the car in the past.

A mate of mine did this last year and fitted the truck tyres, same load capacity etc and the same spec, the tread is fractionally more chunky, and i mean barely noticable, but after fitting them they are fine.

I have used them for the last few months and everything is perfect,

Van tyres = £115 per pair
Truck Tyres = £75 per pair.

No contest. Very Happy

After 5 years I replaced the ones on my Abbey but changed them like with like. Waste of money though because a couple of months after we changed the van Confused
I can't recall who I had to change them but they came to our home to do it.

lol, actually truck tyres, small ones of course, but yes, truck tyres.

they arent like the huge chunky things you see on lorries, they are small 14" tyres.

The tread is ever so slightly chunkier than standard tyres but not noticable unless you get on your knees and stare at them for 5 minutes.

Right not sure what is meant by truck tyres, and me actually working in haulage! but commercial tyres, ie tyres fitted to vans up to 6.5 tonnes, are indeed a good choice for replacement of caravan tyres. They clearly have the index rating for a caravan and are indeed a lot less expensive £45-£55 should get you a decent replacement. now what you need to remember is these tyres may well have a psi rating of up to 65 or 70 when cold, so if your standard caravan tyres are rated at 40 psi, then putting 40 psi into a commercial tyre/truck tyre, will not be safe. Also pumping up your replacement tyres to their max setting,is also not a good idea if there index rating is superior to your original caravan tyres.

Be careful and don't expect some tyre fitter to know the ins and outs on these things....

Thanks for the tip Gio, perhaps they are commercial tyres then, they were described as truck tyres to me so i assumed thats what they were, i did tap the make and spec into the web to compare the spec to my existing tyres so i know they are up to the job.

I am a bit of a nerd to be truthful so always do my research before purchase, i agree, i would never let a tyre fitter decide that for me, the last one i asked in my local tyre shop said to use normal car tyres!! No!!!

Lol, its well worth doing to save a few quid though.

There is actually a way to work out exactly or near as dam it what PSI/bar your tyres should be given the tyres index rating and the weight of a fully loaded van.Alas my hard drive [brain] is full and I seem to have deleted that formula from my full but small hard drive [brain] I am sure someone else will know and it is useful for having a safe set up...

I have commercial tyres fitted to Project Rosey, my trailer fitter chap sorted me out with them (£30 each I think). I'll report back when she's up and rolling
